The Golden Apistogramma hongsloi is one of the most stunning and sought-after dwarf cichlid species, admired for its vibrant golden hues and contrasting red or magenta highlights along the face and fins. This variant of Apistogramma hongsloi showcases exceptional coloration under good care — males display shimmering gold bodies with iridescent spangles, while females remain smaller with a subtle golden tone that deepens during spawning.
Known for their charming personalities, Apistogramma hongsloi are intelligent, social fish that interact with their environment and owners. They make an excellent centerpiece for small to medium planted aquariums, where their colors pop beautifully against a natural backdrop of driftwood, leaf litter, and live plants.
Care Guide
These fish thrive in a well-maintained, planted aquarium with stable parameters and soft, slightly acidic water. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a pair or trio. Provide plenty of hiding spaces using driftwood, caves, and dense vegetation to create territories and reduce aggression, particularly during breeding.
Optimal water conditions include a temperature of 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH between 6.0 and 7.2, and soft to moderately hard water. Clean, well-oxygenated water is essential — regular partial water changes will help maintain their vibrant coloration and long-term health.
Feed a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp, along with occasional live foods to encourage breeding and intensify coloration. They may graze lightly on biofilm or detritus between feedings but should not be relied on for algae control.
Breeding Notes
Like many Apistogramma, this species forms a harem-style breeding system where one male may pair with one or more females. The female lays eggs inside a small cave or crevice and guards them fiercely, while the male defends the surrounding territory. Once the fry hatch, the female continues to protect and guide them. Stable, soft, slightly acidic water (pH around 6.5) promotes successful breeding and fry development.
Compatibility
The Golden Apistogramma hongsloi is peaceful toward other community fish when not spawning but can become territorial during breeding. Ideal tankmates include small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, otocinclus, and corydoras catfish. Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping species.
