The Avocado Puffer (Auriglobus modestus) is a striking and intelligent freshwater pufferfish known for its metallic golden-green body and lively, inquisitive nature. Despite its small size, this species has a bold personality and quickly becomes the focal point of any aquarium. Its shimmering coloration and curious behavior make it a rewarding fish for experienced aquarists seeking a truly interactive species.
Unlike some of its larger relatives, the Avocado Puffer remains small enough for a mid-sized aquarium but retains the same sharp awareness and expressive demeanor puffers are famous for. Each individual has a distinct personality—some are playful and observant, while others may be more assertive or territorial.
Care Guide
Avocado Puffers require a species-only aquarium or a carefully selected setup with similar-sized, robust tankmates (if any). A single specimen should be kept in a tank of at least 30 gallons, while a pair or small group will need 50 gallons or more with ample space and visual barriers. Aquascape the tank with a mix of plants, rocks, and driftwood to create line-of-sight breaks and hiding areas.
This species thrives in warm, well-oxygenated freshwater with moderate flow. Maintain water temperatures between 76–82°F (24–28°C), pH of 7.0–7.8, and soft to moderately hard water. Clean, stable water conditions are essential, as puffers are sensitive to elevated ammonia and nitrite levels. Weekly partial water changes and efficient filtration are mandatory.
Feeding is a key aspect of puffer care. Avocado Puffers are strict carnivores with continuously growing teeth, requiring a diet that naturally wears them down. Offer a varied menu of hard-shelled and meaty foods such as snails, crayfish, cockles, shrimp, and bloodworms. Frozen krill, clams, or crab legs can also be offered occasionally. Avoid soft-only foods, as they won’t help manage tooth growth, which can lead to health issues. Feed once or twice daily in small portions and remove any uneaten food promptly.
Compatibility
The Avocado Puffer is best kept alone or with very carefully chosen tankmates. They are known fin-nippers and can be aggressive, especially in confined spaces. If attempting a community setup, choose fast-moving or armored fish such as larger barbs or loaches and ensure plenty of space and visual separation. Always monitor interactions closely.
Breeding Notes
Captive breeding of Auriglobus modestus is extremely rare, with few documented successes. They are egg layers that scatter their eggs over the substrate. In most home aquariums, maintaining stable conditions and providing an enriching environment is the best focus rather than attempting breeding.
