Bucephalandra sordidula ‘Blue’ thrives under low to medium lighting and is well suited to both low-tech and high-tech aquariums. While CO₂ injection is not required, it can improve growth, encourage fuller foliage, and enhance the plant's signature iridescent blue coloration.
Like all Bucephalandra species, this plant grows from a rhizome that should never be buried in the substrate. Instead, attach it to rocks, driftwood, or other hardscape using aquarium-safe glue or thread. Once established, the roots will naturally anchor themselves to the surface.
Ideal water parameters include temperatures between 70–82°F (21–28°C), a pH of 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Stable water conditions and regular maintenance help keep the leaves healthy and maximize their vibrant coloration. Occasional liquid fertilizer is beneficial, as Bucephalandra primarily absorbs nutrients through the water column.
Because of its slow growth, algae can develop on the leaves if exposed to excessive lighting. Maintaining balanced nutrients, moderate lighting, and good water circulation will help prevent algae while promoting steady, healthy growth.
Propagation
Propagation is achieved by carefully dividing the rhizome. Each section should contain several healthy leaves and a well-developed root system. Once separated, the new sections can be attached to additional hardscape where they will continue to grow independently.

Its compact size and metallic blue sheen provide excellent contrast against bright green carpeting plants, mosses, and larger-leaved species such as Anubias and Java Fern.
