Sales Description
Hemigraphis repanda ‘Narrow’ is an attractive foliage plant known for its long, slender leaves, distinctive textured edges, and beautiful green to purplish coloration. Its narrow, ruffled foliage adds fine detail and visual contrast to planted displays, making it an excellent choice for naturalistic terrariums, paludariums, and other humid environments.
With its compact growth habit and unique leaf shape, this plant pairs beautifully with mosses, ferns, creeping plants, and other tropical foliage. Its unusual texture makes it a great option for hobbyists looking to add variety and depth to their planted layouts.
Important: Hemigraphis repanda is a primarily terrestrial plant and is not suitable for permanent submersion in an aquarium. It is best grown with its foliage above water in a humid paludarium or terrarium, where it can enjoy consistent moisture and humidity.
Care Guide
Hemigraphis repanda ‘Narrow’ grows best in warm, humid environments with consistently moist but well-draining substrate. A tropical terrarium or paludarium with adequate ventilation is ideal. Although it appreciates high humidity, stagnant air combined with constantly waterlogged roots can encourage rot.
Provide medium to bright indirect lighting to support compact growth and healthy foliage. Avoid intense, direct light, which may scorch the leaves or dry the plant out too quickly. Under suitable lighting, the foliage can develop attractive purple undertones that enhance its ornamental appeal.
Maintain temperatures between 68–82°F (20–28°C). A loose, moisture-retentive substrate containing organic matter works well, provided excess water can drain away from the roots. Keep the substrate evenly moist without allowing the roots to sit in stagnant water.
Regular trimming can help maintain a compact shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove damaged or yellowing leaves as needed, and monitor the plant for signs of excessive moisture or inadequate airflow.
Paludarium Placement
Hemigraphis repanda ‘Narrow’ is particularly well suited to the terrestrial section of a paludarium, where its roots can grow in moist substrate while its leaves remain above the waterline. It can be planted along damp banks, around exposed hardscape, or in humid tropical displays.
Do not plant this species fully underwater. Although it may temporarily survive submerged conditions, it is not a true aquatic plant and will generally deteriorate if kept permanently underwater.
Propagation
Propagation is typically achieved through stem cuttings. Healthy cuttings can be placed in moist substrate under warm, humid conditions until roots develop. Once established, the new plants can be transferred to suitable terrarium or paludarium locations.
