The Indawgyi Stream Catfish (Akysis prashadi) is a small, beautifully patterned species of stream catfish native to the clear, fast-flowing waters of northern Myanmar. This rare and fascinating fish displays a rich brown or black base coloration marked with golden to pale yellow bands, creating a stunning contrast under aquarium lighting. Compact in size and peaceful by nature, it’s a perfect choice for aquarists looking to add an unusual and gentle bottom-dweller to a calm, well-oxygenated setup.
Despite its modest appearance, the Indawgyi Stream Catfish has a unique personality. It prefers to stay close to the substrate or under cover during the day and becomes more active during dusk and nighttime. When kept in small groups of three or more, they show more natural foraging behavior and confidence.
Care Guide
This species thrives in aquariums that replicate its natural stream habitat—cool, clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group. Use fine sand or smooth gravel substrate and decorate the aquarium with river stones, driftwood, and leaf litter to create shaded areas and hiding spots. Provide ample structure to mimic the rocky crevices they inhabit in the wild.
Ideal water parameters include a temperature of 72–78°F (22–26°C), pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Consistent water quality and good circulation are essential, as Akysis species are intolerant of high waste levels or stagnant conditions. Gentle aeration and a strong but well-diffused filter output help recreate their natural environment.
Feed a diet of high-quality sinking foods, including catfish pellets, micro wafers, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. They may initially be shy eaters, especially in bright light, so feeding at dusk or after lights-out can encourage natural feeding behavior. Over time, they adapt well to a regular feeding schedule and may even become visible during the day.
Compatibility
Indawgyi Stream Catfish are peaceful and do best in community aquariums with other calm, non-aggressive species. Ideal tankmates include small rasboras, hillstream loaches, danios, and other Southeast Asian stream fish. Avoid large or aggressive tankmates that may outcompete them for food or disturb their resting spots.
Breeding Notes
Breeding in captivity has not been widely documented. However, maintaining a group in stable, clean, and oxygen-rich conditions may encourage natural courtship behaviors. Provide fine substrate and smooth stones for potential spawning areas.
