Ophiopogon japonicus - Potted Terrestrial
Scientific Name: Ophiopogon japonicus
Common Names: Dwarf Mondo Grass, Japanese Mondo Grass, Fountain Plant
Plant Type: Terrestrial, grass-like perennial
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Sales Description
Ophiopogon japonicus is a compact, grass-like ornamental plant known for its slender, arching green leaves and lush, fountain-like growth habit. Its fine foliage adds a natural, grassy texture to planted displays, making it a popular choice for terrariums, paludariums, vivariums, and miniature landscape designs.
With its dense growth and attractive foliage, Ophiopogon japonicus works beautifully as a low-growing accent around rocks, driftwood, and other decorative features. It pairs well with mosses, ferns, and other humidity-loving plants to create a natural, forest-floor appearance.
Although it is sometimes sold alongside aquarium plants, Ophiopogon japonicus is a terrestrial plant and is not suitable for permanent underwater growth. For long-term success, keep its foliage above the waterline in a terrarium or paludarium.
Care Guide
Lighting: Low to medium-bright indirect light is suitable. Moderate lighting helps maintain healthy green foliage, while harsh direct sunlight may cause leaf damage.
Temperature: Approximately 18–27°C (65–81°F) is suitable for typical indoor growing conditions.
Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid allowing the roots to remain in stagnant water for extended periods.
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial, making this plant a good candidate for suitable terrariums and paludariums with adequate airflow.
Substrate: Use a moisture-retentive, well-draining substrate that supports healthy root growth. A loose soil-based mix is generally preferable to compacted substrate.
Growth and Maintenance: This plant grows slowly and gradually forms dense clumps of narrow, arching leaves. Remove yellowing or damaged foliage as needed to maintain a tidy appearance.
Placement Tips
Ophiopogon japonicus is well suited to the foreground of terrariums and the land sections of paludariums. Plant it around stones, along pathways, or beside driftwood to create a miniature grassy landscape. Its compact growth also makes it useful for adding texture and visual contrast among broader-leaved tropical plants.
For aquarium setups, keep the plant emersed with its leaves above the waterline. Permanent submersion can cause the foliage and plant to deteriorate over time.
