Care Guide
Sunset Wagtail Platies are highly adaptable and thrive in well-maintained community aquariums. A minimum tank size of 15–20 gallons is recommended for a small group. Provide a mix of open swimming space and planted areas for comfort and security. They appreciate floating plants or gentle cover, which mimics their natural habitat.
Maintain water temperatures between 72–80°F (22–27°C), pH between 7.0 and 8.2, and moderate hardness. While they are freshwater fish, they can tolerate slightly brackish conditions and even benefit from a small addition of aquarium salt if compatible with other species in the tank. Clean, well-oxygenated water and regular water changes ensure long-term health.
Feed a balanced diet of high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with vegetable matter such as spirulina or blanched spinach, as well as occasional frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Their omnivorous nature makes them easy to feed, and a varied diet enhances their vivid coloration.
Breeding Notes
Like all platies, the Sunset Wagtail Platy is a livebearer and breeds readily in home aquariums. Females give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry approximately every four to six weeks. Provide dense plant cover or floating vegetation for fry to hide, or separate them into a breeder box for better survival rates. Fry grow quickly on crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp.
Compatibility
Sunset Wagtail Platies are peaceful and do exceptionally well in community tanks with similarly sized, non-aggressive species such as tetras, guppies, mollies, corydoras, and danios. They should not be kept with fin-nippers or aggressive fish.
